Free Arrangement System

The floral line system in which no governing geometric logic is imposed, with material placement determined by individual material character and the designer's judgment.

“The free arrangement system is not the absence of design but the absence of geometric logic - resolution depends entirely on the designer's ability to read materials and exercise judgment.”

The free arrangement system classifies arrangements in which no predetermined geometric logic governs line placement. It is not the absence of design discipline but the choice to allow the individual character of materials - rather than a structural framework - to determine their placement. It requires the highest degree of design sensitivity, as the resolution of the composition depends entirely on the designer's judgment. It is most closely associated with vegetative design, where plant logic rather than geometric logic organises the arrangement. Source: Lersch (300).
