The Elements and Principles

The structured body of knowledge governing floral design, comprising the elements framework, the principles framework, and the objectives toward which both are directed.

“Theory is not an abstract study separate from practice - it is the structured language that makes design decisions legible, teachable, and transferable.”

Floral design theory provides the conceptual foundation for every design decision. It is organised into two primary frameworks - the elements of design and the principles of design - and a single overarching branch of objectives. The elements describe the visual properties inherent in materials; the principles describe how those properties must be structured in pursuit of harmony; the objectives describe what a fully resolved design achieves. Together these constitute the theoretical architecture that supports all practical design work.
