Neutral Colours

Black, white, and grey - achromatic colours that carry no hue and mediate between other colours without competing with them.

“Neutrals provide resting places for the eye, prevent chromatic overload, and allow stronger hues to speak more clearly - essential to almost every colour scheme.”

Neutral or achromatic colours exist outside the colour wheel entirely. In floral design they include true black, white, and grey, but also the natural browns and greens of foliage - materials that mediate between colours without asserting chromatic identity. Neutrals provide resting places for the eye, prevent chromatic overload, and allow stronger hues to speak more clearly. They are essential to almost every colour scheme.
