Colour Rhythm

The use of colour as a tool to lead the eye through an arrangement, achieved through repetition of colour or colour sequencing from dark to light.

“Colour sequencing - moving from dark to light values through a design - is a distinct and powerful tool of rhythm that works independently of physical line direction.”

Colour rhythm uses colour to create visual movement. It is achieved through repetition of colours at intervals through the design, or through colour sequencing: the progressive movement from dark to light values that draws the eye along a pathway. Using colour as a tool to lead the eye around and through the arrangement reinforces the broader principle of rhythm. Colour rhythm must be planned in coordination with line direction, repetition, and gradation. Source: Pampling (130).
