Concept

Tone

A hue to which grey has been added, producing a muted, more complex version of the original colour.

“Tone is the colour vocabulary of restraint - its skilled use is one of the clearest markers of developed taste.”

Tones are neither lightened nor darkened but dulled - grey reduces chromatic intensity without dramatically shifting value. Toned colours feel sophisticated and restrained. Many of the most refined contemporary palettes work primarily in tones rather than full hues, where saturated colour risks feeling coarse or heavy-handed. Tone is the colour vocabulary of restraint, and its skilled use is one of the clearest markers of developed taste.
