A hue to which grey has been added, producing a muted, more complex version of the original colour.

Tones are neither lightened nor darkened but dulled - grey reduces chromatic intensity without dramatically shifting value. Toned colours feel sophisticated and restrained. Many of the most refined contemporary palettes work primarily in tones rather than full hues, where saturated colour risks feeling coarse or heavy-handed.
