Tension in Floral Design
The productive visual energy created by the deliberate opposition or near-opposition of elements within a design.
“Tension in design is controlled opposition, not conflict - the charged interval between elements of different character gives the composition its expressive life.”
Tension in design is not conflict - it is controlled opposition. It arises when elements of different character are brought into close relationship: the static sphere beside a dynamic active line, a deep shade beside a pale tint, a compression zone beside an open void. The varying space between different materials in formal-linear design creates areas of artistic tension - the charged interval that gives the composition its expressive life.
