Concept
Transitional Material
Plant material that bridges differences in size, form, or colour between other materials in a design.
“Transitional material is the connective tissue of a composition - it bridges scale and colour extremes and allows the eye to move smoothly.”
Transitional materials are the connective tissue of a composition. Where a large focal flower and a small filler sit beside each other without mediation, the scale difference creates visual discontinuity. Transitional material - an intermediate bloom, a bud, a secondary form - bridges the gap and allows the eye to move smoothly from one scale to the next. The same principle applies to colour: transitional hues bridge chromatic jumps between contrasting materials.
