What is vegetative floral design?
Vegetative floral design is an arrangement style based on nature and the way materials grow - how they grow determines how they are used. The overall impression should be naturalistic, with plant material appearing as if it is growing in its natural habitat rather than having been placed by a designer. Placement should not look contrived. Its criterion of success is not purely aesthetic but ecological: does it feel as though it grew this way? Vegetative design requires deep plant knowledge - an understanding of which species grow together, at what heights, in what seasons, and with what spatial logic. Materials are organised by plant logic rather than by geometric logic. Freely arranged focal points, organic forms, and the absence of a radial line system are all characteristic of vegetative design. Sources: Pampling (350), Assman (400).
