Welcome to our March Flower Thoughts.

Design of the Month

Created by Sydney Floral Designer and Floristry Teacher, Duc Thuan Bui, this composition pushes the boundaries of a hand tied bouquet while using sustainable materials and methods. Duc constructed the design as part of his studies in the International Master Florist program offered at The Boerma Instituut in The Netherlands - a well regarded program moderated by Gregor Lersch.

The design employs common characteristics of a hand tied bouquet in that it has one main binding point, and is a self contained construction that does not rely on the container for structural support. It can be removed from the water source and held easily with one hand.

Duc explains: “In my opinion, floral design is a refinement journey. It is a constant development of both, understanding the theories and mastering the techniques”, a philosophy wholly captured in this completed bouquet.

As I mentioned in our last newsletter Flower Thinking soon welcomes French Designer Frédéric Dupré to Australia for a special two day workshop event in central Sydney. Places have been selling fast and there’s just a handful of spots left.

Announcing Flower Thinking Brisbane 2025 with Bart Hassam

Following the success of our project with Gregor Lersch in Sydney last year, I am planning our next major design program, this time in Brisbane.

With six uniquely focused events over five days. it will be a rare chance to see and work with Australia’s own International Master and Interflora World Cup Champion, Bart Hassam.

Bart predominantly presents overseas, so this will be a fantastic opportunity to see his talents and learn from Bart on our own home soil.

Program details are being finalised and I can share with you that there’ll be a five day program including

demonstrations
a two day workshop
a seminar for floral designers and artists, and
industry-focused sessions for retail florists, floristry teachers and students.

You can pick and choose which events you want to attend or join us for all of them.

Melbourne International Flower Show

The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show is less than a week away, and is once again packed with floral highlights and attractions. If you can make it to the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens it will be well worth the journey.

Runs from 26th to 30th March.

Future of Floristry Panel Discussion

If you are interested in where floristry and floral design are headed, then a special Live Panel Discussion event at this year’s MIFGS should be on your agenda. It’s hosted by The Ivy Institute (Sydney) on Saturday, 29 March at 5:30pm.

The panel includes Susan McCleary (USA) and Australian floral designer and educator Matthew Landers.

Event Details & Tickets

One Container, Five Elements

Our next One Container Five Elements program starts at the beginning of May.

Choose a container and join me in exploring some of the fundamentals of design. Your container can be an old go-to, a challenging unfamiliar vessel or a new favourite. The online program invites you to create five designs using the container, each time focusing on one of the elements of design.

The practice reaffirms the interconnectedness of all the elements while often bringing a new appreciation for the value of each one. The course designs are reviewed via the principles of floral design, and I support you through the activities, with discussions (live and/or recorded), examples and suggestions.
