Design of the Month

Our May Design of the Month is by Gregor Lersch and was created for a workshop in Fremantle on his last visit to Australia (2019). The composition is an exciting example of how asymmetry can be stretched via the concept of displacement. The composition starts with a thick wood slice, with innovative and subtle mechanics locating the main area of interest well away from the point of origin.

Material Favouritism

Do you have a material that you return to again and again over the years? I have a few, and I recently recalled one that has been a solution to several design issues I’ve confronted - sandpaper. Not only is it readily available and economical, it has an organic ‘feel’ so it works well with most horticultural materials.

It can add immediate textural interest to a composition, acting as a backdrop or covering a design component, such as a sphere. While it comes in many colours (check out the painting accessories aisle when you’re next at the hardware store) I prefer the plain variety in a natural, beige-ish sand colour.

Different degrees of coarseness offer subtle variations in colour and texture - I sometimes like to mix them, providing subtle contrasts that can make a design more interesting through intrigue. I have covered baseboards and the walls of booth displays in sandpaper pieces for competitions, as well as using it on a smaller scale, wrapping strips around cylindrical forms or cutting it into small squares and gluing it to a ball.

For Flower Thinking's current One Container, Five Elements program I am using a jug-style container in a pale, neutral colour that has a grainy, almost sand-like texture. Incorporating sandpaper in a composition using the container was a ready way of creating a visual connection between the vessel and the arrangement.
