Axis
The structural spine of a composition around which all balance decisions are made.
“The axis is the structural spine of every composition - the reference point for all balance decisions, in both symmetrical and asymmetrical work.”
The axis is the imaginary line - most commonly vertical - around which visual weight is distributed. It is the reference point for assessing both symmetrical and asymmetrical balance. In a traditional symmetrical arrangement, materials are placed to echo each other's weight on either side of the vertical axis. In modern asymmetrical work, the axis is still present but materials are distributed with deliberate inequality.
