Colour

The visual element with the most immediate psychological impact, operating through hue, value, and chroma, and uniquely mirroring the entire design principles framework within itself.

“Colour is the only element that fully mirrors the entire principles framework internally. Because colour affects us automatically - before conscious processing - it may be more fundamental than form or line.”

Colour is the only element that contains within itself a complete parallel system of principles - colour balance, colour rhythm, colour contrast, colour dominance, colour proportion, and colour scale. These must be coordinated with the design principles, not merely applied alongside them. Because colour affects us automatically - before conscious processing begins - a well-designed arrangement with good form and line can lose its appeal entirely if colour is poorly chosen.
