Contrast
The deliberate juxtaposition of differing elements to create visual interest, emphasise difference, and attract and hold the eye.
“Contrasting material should remain related to what it contrasts with - or unity will be lost. Contrast without relatedness produces fragmentation.”
Contrast involves carefully planning and choosing elements to avoid monotony. Elements are chosen and positioned to emphasise differences in their properties - the differences attract the eye. Contrast is usually achieved through variety in colours, forms, textures, and lines. A crucial qualification: contrasting material should remain related to what it contrasts with, or unity will be lost. Bold contrasts can be very effective but require careful planning.
