The Design Recipe

A pedagogical metaphor expressing the relationship between elements, principles, and the act of design.

“Recipes are followed, not interpreted - a known limitation of the metaphor that conflicts with the framework's own claim that elements give freedom to express.”

Design = Ingredients (Elements) + Method (Principles). This formulation is useful for introducing the framework to students, as it separates what you use from how you use it. It must be used carefully, however: recipes are followed, not interpreted. The metaphor risks implying that correct inputs plus correct method produce correct output mechanically - which conflicts with the framework's own insistence that the elements give freedom and flexibility to express.
