Element of Design
A fundamental visual property inherent in materials, which the designer identifies, reads, and works with in composing a design.
“Elements give freedom and flexibility to express - they are more artistic than rigid concepts.”
The five elements are Form, Space, Colour, Texture, and Line. They are what you work with - the properties of materials that exist before any organisational decision is made. They give freedom and flexibility to express and are more artistic than rigid concepts. A designer who cannot read the elements in their materials is working without the language of their craft.
