Glossary

Form

The three-dimensional mass and shape of an individual material or of an entire arrangement, defined by length, breadth, and depth.

“In formal-linear design individual forms are the primary units of composition; in decorative design they are subordinated to collective mass.”

Form corresponds to familiar geometrical solids - sphere, cube, cylinder, pyramid, cone - though organic and irregular forms are equally present in practice. Individual materials carry their own forms that determine their visual weight and function. The overall form of an arrangement describes its three-dimensional silhouette. In formal-linear design individual forms are the primary units of composition; in decorative design they are subordinated to collective mass.
