Formation Systems

A set of German organisational techniques for placing materials into a design to generate specific spatial and expressive effects.

“Formation systems are tools that operate alongside and in support of the Elements and Principles framework - not replacements for it.”

Formation systems include: Repetition of Lines/Rows; Reducing (using less material); Presenting Formations (Zones/Sections); Grading/Staggering; Defining the Environment/Habitat; Developing Tension; Creating Compact Areas (Condensing); Creating Emphasis (Accentuating); Placements and Spatial Depth. These tools operate alongside and in support of the canonical Elements and Principles framework. The synthesis of Assman and Lersch on formation systems is unique in English.
