Proportion

The relationship of relative amounts and volumetric areas within a design, and between the design and the space it occupies.

“Proportion deals with amounts, not sizes - this is the essential distinction from Scale. There are no absolute rules on proportion; guidelines are starting points.”

Proportion deals with amounts, not sizes. The classical guideline - plant material one and a half to two times the height or width of the container - is a starting point, not a rule; there are no absolute rules on proportion. True proportion is shaped by the volume of one area to another, the overall mass and dimensions relative to the space, the height of the background, and the visual weight of all elements combined.
