Silhouette in Floral Design
The outline or profile of a plant material or arrangement as seen against its background - the primary unit of meaning in formal-linear design.
“Every silhouette its place - lines traverse consciously so that no silhouette is accidentally interrupted but rather emphasised. Lersch: almost a ballet of floral silhouette.”
In formal-linear design, each material is assessed for the quality of its silhouette - its complexity, its directional energy, its relationship to adjacent silhouettes. Lines never accidentally cross but traverse consciously so that the effect of any given silhouette is never interrupted but rather emphasised. Lersch's description of the formal-linear form as almost a ballet of floral silhouette remains the most evocative formulation of what studying silhouette demands.
