Spatial Depth
The three-dimensional layering of a design created by placing materials at different foreground, midground, and background distances.
“Balance is a three-axis question - depth must be considered alongside vertical and horizontal balance. Colour value is the primary tool for intensifying perceived depth.”
Spatial depth prevents a design from reading as flat. Depth is reinforced by colour: warm dark colours advance visually while cool pale colours recede, making value one of the most effective tools for intensifying perceived depth. Recessing some flowers leads the eye into the arrangement, creating rhythm in the depth dimension. Depth must be considered alongside vertical and horizontal balance - balance is a three-axis question.
