Split Complementary Harmony
A colour scheme using one hue and the two colours on either side of its direct complement, offering contrast with reduced intensity.

Split complementary schemes offer the energy of a complementary relationship without its full tension. Using yellow, the split complements are red-violet and blue-violet rather than violet itself. This produces a three-colour scheme with strong but controlled contrast - energetic enough to hold interest, manageable enough to resolve into harmony. It is one of the most practically useful schemes in the full range.
