Vegetative Design

An arrangement style based on nature and the way materials grow, creating the impression that plant material is growing as it would in its natural habitat.

“The criterion of success in vegetative design is ecological rather than purely aesthetic: does it feel as though it grew this way?”

In vegetative design, how materials grow determines how they are used. The overall impression should be naturalistic - placement should not look contrived. Its criterion of success is not purely aesthetic but ecological: does it feel as though it grew this way? It requires deep plant knowledge and an understanding of which species grow together, at what heights, and in what seasons. Materials are organised by plant logic, not geometric logic.
