Concept

Static Line

A vertical or horizontal line that creates visual stability, structural anchoring, and a sense of stillness within a composition.

“Static lines are structurally generative forces that provide the counterweight against which dynamic lines achieve their expressiveness.”

Static lines are rigid, unchanging, and without much energy or motion - but this is not a weakness. They are structurally generative forces that provide the counterweight against which dynamic lines achieve their expressiveness. Vertical static lines suggest strength and formality; horizontal static lines suggest rest and calm. The traditional symmetrical arrangement is structured around a dominant vertical static line intersecting a secondary horizontal one.
