Space in Floral Design
The volumetric area a design occupies and the intentional intervals between materials within it.
“Managing the relationship between positive and negative space is a primary measure of a designer's development.”
Space carries two essential meanings: the area the arrangement occupies, which defines its size, proportion, shape and line; and the area between materials, which used effectively is a valuable tool. These are further specified as positive space - the presence of material or mass - and negative space - the deliberate absence of material. Neither is fully meaningful without the other. Managing the relationship between the two is a primary measure of a designer's development.
