Balance in Floral Design

The distribution of visual and physical weight within a design so that it is both stable and resolved.

“Balance must be assessed in three dimensions - vertically, horizontally, and in depth - not just across a flat surface.”

Balance operates in two registers: actual balance - physical stability, will the arrangement stand without falling? - and visual balance - the impression of equilibrium the eye perceives when travelling over the design. Both must be managed, at different stages of construction and for different reasons. Balance is assessed vertically, horizontally, and in depth. It is achieved by the skilled deployment of all five elements.
