Scale in Floral Design
The relationship of relative sizes of individual materials within a design.
“Scale deals with sizes, proportion deals with amounts - the clearest single distinction in the framework. Transitional material bridges scale extremes.”
Scale deals with sizes, not amounts - this is the key distinction from proportion. Using only two flowers of vastly different sizes without transitional material between them will not produce an aesthetically pleasing design. Grading the sizes of materials within the design, and incorporating transitional material to link extremes, achieves the desired harmony. To remember: proportion deals with amounts; scale deals with sizes.
