Introduction
This schedule forms the basis of the design tasks for Designing to Win - Between the Gaps.
Participating Designers will work to the schedule to create an initial design for submission by the first due date - 11 July 2026. Feedback and analysis will be provided in Design Forum 1 - 13 July 2026 - and in subsequent notes.
Participating Designers will then create a second design based on the same schedule, and learning from the first submmisions. A revised/improved version of the first design is encouraged for the second submission - due 25 July 2026. A different design with a revised/improved approach to the task is also possible.
Feedback and analysis will be offered on the second design at Design Forum 2 - 27 July 2026 - and in the follow up eBook, Competition Learnings. -

Brief
Create an arrangement for display in the entry of an Art Gallery at the opening of an exhibition of contemporary paintings titled ‘Between the Gaps’. The gallery entry is a modern, raw concrete environment — with textured block walls and matching floor in cool grey tones. The design will be displayed on a concrete plinth, against a wall.
-
Information and Rules
- Placement/Space – the design is to be displayed on a square plinth. The plinth is a smooth, concrete texture in pale grey. It is approximately 450mm wide x 450mm deep x 800mm high. The ceiling height above the plinth is at 2500mm. The back, vertical side of the plinth is approximately 400mm from the wall. Refer to the supplied photo of the plinth in situ for further detail and context.
- The design must be created to be viewed mainly from the front.
- Plant material must predominate.
- Artificial plant material is prohibited.
- Designs must be the authentic work of the designer.
-
Submission and Photography
- Designs are to be photographed against a plain/neutral background with plain staging/props (if required).
- Submissions may include multiple photos, up to a maximum of 5 images, and MUST include one full shot of the design taken from the front, showing the WHOLE outline.
- Images must be in clear focus and of reasonable resolution (between 1 to 5 MB).
- Digital manipulation of photos, other than basic image-quality editing (cropping, straightening, light/colour correction, etc.) is not permitted.
Submissions must list the approximate dimensions of the design, including:
- Height - above the plinth (top of plinth to highest point of the design), and/or;
- Height/length - overall (lowest point of the design to highest point of the design)
- Width and depth

Choose your way of learning
You can join Designing to Win as a designer and contribute work which is assessed as if you were in a competition, or you can join as part of the audience and gain invaluable insights into how floral competitions are judged.
Either way, you will gain insights that can elevate your competition game, in a supportive and inclusive environment, led by a World Champion and Master Florist Mark Pampling.
