Diagonal Direction

An arrangement in which the dominant thrust of the design's proportional mass runs at an angle, creating dynamic movement and visual tension at the whole-composition level.

“Diagonal direction carries the energy of dynamic lines at the whole-composition level - it is the most directionally assertive of the orientations.”

A diagonally directed arrangement has its visual mass oriented along an angled axis - the design's dominant thrust moves neither straight up nor horizontally but at an oblique angle. This configuration carries the character of dynamic lines at the level of the whole composition: it suggests movement, tension, and directional drive. Diagonal proportional direction is associated with contemporary and asymmetrical work. Source: Lersch (300).
