Concept
Downward Direction
An arrangement in which the dominant thrust of the design's proportional mass is directed downward, carrying the expressive character of passive lines at the whole-composition level.
“Downward direction carries the expressive character of passive lines at the whole-composition level - it suggests weight, repose, and descending movement.”
A downward-directed arrangement has its visual mass oriented toward the ground - trailing, cascading, or descending from its origin. This configuration carries the character of passive lines at the level of the whole composition: it suggests repose, weight, and downward movement. Cascade and trailing arrangements typically carry downward proportional direction. Source: Lersch (300).
