Concept
Horizontal Direction
An arrangement in which the dominant thrust of the design's proportional mass extends horizontally, carrying the calm and stability of static horizontal lines.
“Horizontal direction carries the calm and stability of static horizontal lines at the whole-composition level - it is the resting orientation of design.”
A horizontally directed arrangement has its visual mass extending laterally - the design spreads along a horizontal axis rather than rising or descending. This configuration carries the character of static horizontal lines at the level of the whole composition: it suggests rest, calm, and lateral extension. Table centrepieces and low flat arrangements are the most common expression of horizontal proportional direction. Source: Lersch (300).
