Number of Focal Points

The axis of Lersch's taxonomy that classifies a design by how many centres of visual emphasis it contains and how they are organised.

“The number of focal points directly determines how dominance and balance must be managed - increasing focal points multiplies the points of visual tension in the composition.”

The number of focal points axis connects directly to the principle of Dominance: it asks how many competing centres of interest a design contains and how they are organised. A single focal point concentrates attention; several structured focal points distribute it deliberately; several freely arranged focal points suggest a more organic distribution of visual interest. Traditional design typically has a single focal point; modern and vegetative design often distribute interest across multiple, freely arranged focal points. Source: Lersch (300).
