Order
The primary classificatory axis of Lersch's taxonomy, establishing whether a design is organised symmetrically or asymmetrically as the most fundamental structural question.
“Order is the first question Lersch's taxonomy asks - symmetrical or asymmetrical - because this decision determines the structural logic of every subsequent choice.”
Order is the broadest, most fundamental of the six arrangement category axes: it asks whether an arrangement distributes visual weight equally on either side of a central axis, or distributes it unevenly. Symmetry and asymmetry are not merely design tools in this framework - they are primary organisational categories that determine the logic of every subsequent decision. Traditional design tends toward symmetry; modern design is most often characterised by asymmetry. The choice of order is made before any material is selected or placed. Source: Lersch (300).
