Symmetrical Order

An arrangement configuration in which equal visual weight is distributed on either side of the central axis, suggesting a mirror relationship between the two halves.

“Symmetrical order suggests order and formality - it does not require mechanical duplication of placement, only equal visual weight on either side of the central axis.”

Symmetrical order is the primary classificatory category for traditional design. Symmetrical designs have long been used to suggest order and are most common for more formal occasions. Equal weight on either side of the central axis does not require identical placement - the flowers and foliages are arranged to create good rhythm and form, with the overall shape mirrored rather than the precise positions of individual materials. Symmetrical order typically implies the use of a radial line system and the even distribution of focal materials along the central vertical axis. Sources: Pampling (100, 200, 360), Lersch (300).
