Arrangement Style

The axis of Lersch's taxonomy that describes the fundamental intent and character of a design - whether it is Decorative, Vegetative, or Formal-Linear.

“The arrangement style axis classifies what a design is trying to be - not how it is built - making it a question of intent before a question of technique.”

The arrangement style axis asks not how a design is built but what kind of thing it is trying to be. Each of the three styles foregrounds different elements, makes different demands on the principles, and produces a different relationship between designer, materials, and finished work. Arrangement style is classified independently from order and line system: a design may be asymmetrical in order, formal-linear in style, and use a diagonal line system - each axis is independent. Every design regardless of style must still be created while carefully considering all principles. Source: Lersch (300).
