Colour Theory in Floral Design
A complete framework for understanding and applying colour in floral design, encompassing colour properties, harmony schemes, and a system of colour principles that mirrors the design principles framework.
“Colour affects us automatically - before conscious processing begins - making it arguably more fundamental than form or line. An arrangement with good form and line can lose its appeal entirely if the colour is poorly chosen.”
Colour is one of the most important aspects of floristry. Because colour affects us automatically it can be considered more fundamental than form, or even line: an arrangement that is well designed with good form and line can lose its appeal if the colour is poorly chosen. The colour framework encompasses three interconnected areas: colour properties (hue, value, chroma and their derivatives), colour harmony schemes (nine structured relationships from monochromatic to polychromatic), and colour principles (the design principles applied specifically to colour). The principles of design and the principles of colour are identical and must be coordinated within a design for a harmonious result. Sources: Pampling (105, 130, 131).
