Concept

Analogous Harmony

A colour scheme using a group of adjacent colours on the colour wheel, with one colour dominating.

“More than three hues may be used in analogous harmony, provided only one primary is included in the sequence - a specific, teachable rule.”

Analogous schemes typically use at least three adjacent colours - often one primary, one secondary, and two adjacent tertiaries - with one colour clearly dominant. More than three hues may be used, provided only one primary is included in the sequence. Colours should be blended reasonably closely for maximum effect; too wide a spread introduces tension that undermines the scheme's inherent coherence.
