Colour Contrast

The use of variety in colours or differences in value to emphasise individual distinctions between elements and create visual interest within the colour dimension of a design.

“Colour contrast operates on two axes simultaneously: contrast between different hues, and contrast within a single hue through value differences.”

Colour contrast is achieved by using pale blues to make more intense deeper blues stand out, or bright yellow to contrast starkly against deep purple. It operates on two axes: contrast between different hues, and contrast within a single hue through differences in value. Colour contrast must be coordinated with the overall principle of contrast in the design - reinforcing rather than conflicting with it. The same qualification applies: contrasting colour should remain related to what it contrasts with, or unity will be lost. Source: Pampling (130).
