Design Forms

The three canonical arrangement styles in floral design - Decorative, Vegetative, and Formal-Linear - each representing a distinct intent, approach, and relationship between designer, materials, and finished work.

“The three design forms ask not how a design is built but what kind of thing it is trying to be - a question of intent before a question of technique.”

Design forms describe not how a design is built but what kind of thing it is trying to be. Decorative design combines elements into a contrived, usually geometric shape in which flowers speak as a whole rather than individually. Vegetative design is based on nature and the way materials grow. Formal-linear design prioritises the individual forms and lines of each material, each carefully considered and incorporated for maximum desired effect. Every design form still requires the full and careful application of all principles of design. Sources: Pampling (350), Lersch, Assman (310).
