Decorative Design Form

An arrangement style in which materials are selected and placed for their collective visual effect, with flowers speaking as a whole rather than individually.

“In decorative design, flowers speak as a whole rather than individually - individual character is subordinated to collective visual effect.”

Decorative design is the most widely practised style in commercial floristry worldwide. Elements are combined into a contrived, usually geometric shape. The individual character of materials is subordinated to the collective impression. The diagnostic question: am I positioning this material to create an effect or impression? If yes, that is decorative intent. It typically uses even distribution of materials and radial line systems, and is most associated with traditional symmetrical work.
