FAQ

What are the elements of floral design?

The five elements of floral design are Form, Space, Colour, Texture, and Line. They are the fundamental visual properties inherent in materials - the ingredients you work with before any organisational decision is made. Form describes the three-dimensional shape of a material or arrangement. Space encompasses both the area an arrangement occupies and the deliberate intervals between materials. Colour is the element with the most immediate psychological impact - because colour affects us automatically, a well-designed arrangement can lose its appeal if the colour is poorly chosen. Texture applies to all materials in a design including the container and accessories, not only the flowers. Line is commonly the fundamental essence of a design - it leads the eye through the arrangement and gives it its structural skeleton. Together the five elements give freedom and flexibility to express, and are more artistic than rigid concepts. Sources: Pampling (100, 105).
