Developing Tension
A formation technique that deliberately generates controlled visual opposition between elements to create expressive energy.
“Developing tension requires calibrated proximity - too close and materials fight, too far apart and the tension dissipates. The core skill of formal-linear design.”
Developing tension is the formation-level method for achieving the compositional concept of Tension. It involves the deliberate placement of opposing materials - active and passive lines, compressed and released zones, spherical forms and directional lines - in calculated proximity. The opposition must be controlled: too close and the materials fight; too far apart and the tension dissipates. Developing tension is the core skill of formal-linear design.
