Arrangement Style

The second classificatory axis in Lersch's taxonomy, describing the fundamental intent and character of the design: Decorative, Vegetative, or Formal-Linear.

“The arrangement styles ask not how a design is built but what kind of thing it is trying to be - a fundamentally different question.”

The three arrangement styles ask not how a design is built but what kind of thing it is trying to be. Each style foregrounds different elements, makes different demands on the principles, and produces a different relationship between the designer, the materials, and the finished work. Every design - regardless of style - must still be created while carefully considering all principles of design.
