Counteractive Relationship

The productive opposition between a static, collectively gathering form and a dynamic, directional line - the primary tension generator of formal-linear design.

“The sphere and the active line are ideal counteractive opposites - alliums and corylus is the named practical example of this most productive tension in formal-linear design.”

A sphere represents a geometric shape whose surface is at all points equally distant from its centre; it displays a collective force and gives off a static effect. Line directions achieve a dynamic effect and are ideal counteractive opposites to the sphere. The named practical example is alliums (spherical form) paired with corylus (active line). The leaf surface also represents form and creates tension when incorporated with linear materials.
