Dominance

The establishment of clear visual hierarchy within a design by giving one type of element greater emphasis than all others.

“There must be dominance of only one type of element at a time for harmony to exist. Multiple competing dominances produce confusion.”

Dominance requires more than one element to exist - something can only be dominant in relation to something else. There must be dominance of only one type of element at a time for harmony to exist: dominance of one colour, one form, one texture. Multiple competing dominances produce confusion. Dominant areas are usually referred to as focal areas or areas of interest. Large round forms, strong bold colours, and flat shiny textures are among the most common dominant elements.
