Economy of Material

The principle that formal-linear and contemporary design achieves greater expressive clarity through restraint - using as little material as possible.

“Economy is not parsimony - it is the design discipline that forces each chosen material to work harder and speak more clearly.”

If too many materials with line directions are applied, individual lines lose their importance. If too many forms are used, forms lose their distinction. A formal-linear design loses its statement when too many materials have been used. Economy is not parsimony; it is the design discipline that forces each chosen material to work harder and speak more clearly. Restraint is not a limitation - it is a precondition of expressive clarity.
