Number of Focal Points

The classification of a design by whether it has one focal point, several structured focal points, or several freely arranged focal points.

“The number of focal points directly determines how dominance and balance must be managed across the whole composition.”

This category connects directly to the Dominance principle: it asks how many competing centres of interest a design contains and how they are organised. A single focal point concentrates attention; several structured focal points distribute it deliberately; several freely arranged focal points suggest a more organic distribution of visual interest. The choice has direct consequences for how dominance and balance are managed across the whole composition.
