Order

The primary classificatory axis of Lersch's taxonomy, establishing whether a design is organised symmetrically or asymmetrically.

“In Lersch's taxonomy, symmetry and asymmetry are primary organisational categories that determine the logic of every subsequent decision - not merely design tools.”

Order is the broadest, most fundamental classification: it asks whether an arrangement distributes weight equally on either side of an imaginary central axis or distributes it unevenly. Symmetry and asymmetry are not merely design tools in this framework - they are primary organisational categories that determine the logic of every subsequent decision. Traditional design tends toward symmetry; modern design is most often characterised by asymmetry.
