Polychromatic Harmony

A colour scheme using many hues together, requiring exceptional structural control to prevent visual cancellation.

“Strong hues at full chroma in combination tend to cancel each other out - polychromatic failure is the clearest illustration of why colour theory matters.”

Polychromatic harmony is the most demanding scheme to execute. Multiple strong hues at full chroma tend to cancel each other out - the dramatic effect becomes muddled and loose. Successful polychromatic work typically relies on soft tints and tones carefully distributed, with strong chroma used sparingly at the focal point only. It requires mastery of chroma management and dominance hierarchy. Polychromatic failure is the clearest illustration of why colour theory matters.
