Repetition

The use of a form, colour, texture, or line type more than once within a design, each time modified slightly to enhance the effect.

“Each repeated element should be modified - unmodified repetition produces pattern, not rhythm. The interval between repeated elements is as important as the elements themselves.”

Repetition is the most fundamental tool of rhythm. Each time an element is repeated it should be modified - in size, placement, or intensity - or the result is pattern rather than rhythm. Repeating a large round form with a group of smaller round forms, or with a form of slightly paler colour, creates visual continuity without monotony. The interval between repeated elements is as important as the elements themselves.
