Geometric Form

The category of forms in floral design that correspond to familiar geometrical solids - sphere, cube, cylinder, pyramid, cone - each carrying distinct visual weight and expressive character.

“The sphere is the most significant geometric form in formal-linear design - its collective, static force makes it the ideal counteractive opposite to dynamic line materials.”

Geometric forms are the most clearly defined category of form in floral design. The sphere is among the most significant: it displays a collective force and a static effect, making it an ideal counteractive opposite to dynamic line directions. Pointed forms carry directional energy and are typically placed toward the outside of a formal-linear design; round forms carry collective force and are placed toward the interior. In formal-linear design, an understanding of geometric form and its contrast with linear form is foundational. Sources: Pampling (100, 106), Assman (310).
